Sports offered
Sport presents the opportunity for physical exercise, character development and social interaction. 80% of learners participate in winter and summer sports.
Experienced coaches coach the ten rugby teams (two u.14 teams; two u.15 teams; two u.16 teams and four u.19 teams) who all participate in the premier league . Annually there are tournaments at Oakdale Agricultural School and Paul Roos Gimnasium, as well as sports days at Worcester Gymnasium, Huguenot High School and Vredenburg High School. Durbanville High School annually hosts the u.14 Sevens Tournament in which 10 top schools in the WP participate.
Netball clinics, as well as tournaments, including the National Top Netball Tournament in George, are attended annually during holidays. In 2009 the u.19A netball team was awarded a silver medal and second place at the National Top Netball Tournament. Excellent external coaches such as Joana Winterbach (coach of a WP team for the past eight years) contribute to the high standard of our netball. Durbanville High School has produced numerous WP netball players and two national players during the past few years. In 2008 our u.19 team was the WP Schools Knockout Champion and came third in the National Knockout Championships. In 2009 the Durbies were the WP champions and claimed second place in the Western Cape heats during the National Knockout Championships.
Currently there are six boys' cricket teams that are very successful in the WP leagues. The school also has five cricket nets, a bowling machine, two cricket pitches with face guards, other necessary equipment and in-house cricket nets.
Durbanville High School has revived WP girls' cricket. At the moment our u.19 team is playing in the WP league. The school has also produced a WP player. In 2009 the girls' cricket team played in the Knockout final.
Every year our girls' and boys' hockey teams participate in interschool competitions against Stellenberg High School, in tournaments against York High School in George, Swartland High School, Vredenburg High School and Hugenot High School, and in other league games. The girls' hockey team also plays in the Astro league.
Interhouse and Co-ed athletics meetings are held every year. The top athletes then participate in the North Zone, WP, Western Cape and South African meetings. In 2009 two of our athletes participated in the SA Schools and Club Championship meetings and both achieved third positions.
From 2010, biathlon will be offered as an official school sport. During the past three years one of our athletes was awarded a number of medals on an international level. League races take place on Wednesdays.
Cross-country is offered during the winter with league races on Wednesdays.
There are eight tennis teams each playing in its own league. The u.15 teams (one boys’ and one girls’ team) can be incorporated with the senior teams after the first term. There are three boys’ and three girls’ teams in the senior league, each comprising four players. From 2010 onwards, the school will have access to a tennis academy with a professional coach who will coach the first teams.
The school has two golf teams registered with the WP Schools Golf Union. In 1999 and 2000, two players played for WP and we are one of the three top golf schools in the Northern Suburbs. During the past two years
our school has had players in the Boland team. Golf is played throughout the year due to the summer league.
Swimming is offered during the first and fourth terms. Coaching is presented by a professional swimming coach (Tanith van Meyeren), who has already achieved excellent results with the school’s swimming team. The school is affiliated with the WP schools swimming union and participates in various galas. The galas are usually held on Thursdays. Practices take place on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. For queries, contact Mr A. Meyer, the swimming coordinator.
