One act plays

Durbanville High School is well known for the excellent one act plays that it enters into numerous drama competitions each year. Our learners excel at these festivals each year and have been top acheivers at the ATKV Nasionale Tienertoneelkompetisie for the past few years.

In 2009 our productions Lara Smit – Boernooi (Hennie van Greunen) and Pretpark (Wim Vorster – edited by Jan Burger) did incredibly well. Lara Smit – Boernooi was awarded third place in the ATKV Nasionale Tienertoneelkompetisie and was also the national category winner for best ensemble and best technical team of a production.

Drama competition

In the first semester each year we participate in the City of Cape Town’s Individual Drama Competition. This wonderful competition attracts entries from all over the country and provides drama of the highest quality.

In 2008 two of our learners, Helanje Goussard and Karli Heine, performed exceptionally well. These two learners reached the top 16 out of more than 400 entries.

Karli Heine was chosen from the finalists of the competition to take part in the teenage drama “18*” that was written for the Suid-Oosterfees by Saartjie Botha and directed by Marthinus Basson. This play was perfomed in 2009 at the KKNK and at Aardklop.

In 2009 our entrants were Karli Heine, Kay Smith and Lara Hattingh and from a record entry of 558 participants, all three Durbies reached the final round of 60, which took place from 22 – 23 May in die Artscape Theatre.

They achieved as follows:

Lara Hattingh (gr 8) progressed to the top 30.
Karli Heine (gr 12) progressed to the top 16.
Kay Smith (gr 12) progressed to the top 8, and was granted the opportunity to perform in the gala programme.

As a result of her achievement, Kay was awarded a drama bursary valued at R20 000 from Northlink College. She was also given a role in the 2010 stage production of the popular prescribed work Vaselinetjie, which will be performed at next year’s Suid-Oosterfees and the KKNK!
