History

Durbanville High School is situated in the heart of Durbanville. It was established in 1827 and we have had a proud history ever since.

In 1827 the first principal of the local school, Mr H.F. Mellet, was welcomed as educational leader at Pampoenkraal, as it was then known.

The next 50 years were characterised by problems with the teachers, the government, the church and competition with private schools. Stability was achieved when Mr C.J. Haefele was appointed as principal in 1887. He occupied that position until 1921. The boys’ school and girls’ school amalgamated during that time and became a school for boys and girls. The school grew steadily and in 1895 there were 95 learners; 120 learners in 1913, and at the end of 1921, 131 learners were registered. In 1945 the school achieved high school status with 350 learners from sub. A to std 10. Mr A.K. de Jager was the principal at that stage (1945).

Due to growing numbers the primary school branched off in 1955 and the high school and primary school developed as separate entities. In 1951 another milestone was reached when the cornerstone of the current building was laid. The current principal, Mr G. Germishuys, was appointed in 1997.

From humble beginnings in 1927 we have grown into a prestigious Afrikaans-medium school with excellent facilities.
